Colds, fevers and ear infections: what to do at home.

A parent’s checklist for common winter illnesses, with clear signs for when to call us.

Colds: comfort, not cure

Most colds run 7–10 days. Saline and suction for stuffy infants, honey (age 1+) for coughs, fluids and rest for everyone. Antibiotics don’t touch viruses — call if breathing is labored, symptoms pass 10 days, or improvement suddenly reverses.

Fevers: number plus child

Treat the child, not the thermometer: a playful 101°F needs less action than a listless 100°F. Dose fever reducers by weight, keep fluids going, and call for any fever in babies under 3 months, fever over 104°F, or fever lasting more than three days.

Ear infections: watch the signs

Tugging, night waking, and cold-followed fussiness are classic clues — but only an ear exam confirms it. Many mild cases resolve on their own; we’ll advise watchful waiting or treatment based on age, severity, and which ear.

When to call us promptly

  • Trouble breathing, wheezing, or bluish lips
  • Dehydration: no tears, dry mouth, few wet diapers
  • Stiff neck, severe headache, or unusual sleepiness
  • Rash with fever that doesn’t fade under glass
